VWES Students Led The Pledges
Thank you to Viola Wilson Elementary 5th-graders for leading the Pledge of Allegiance and the Texas Pledge.
They also had great questions for our Board members!
2024-25 Tax Rate
The Board voted to lower the district's property tax rate for the sixth straight year.
The 2024-25 tax rate will decrease per $100 valuation from $0.99320 to $0.99090. The district's tax rate has decreased by a total of 36 cents, or 26%, since 2019, and is among one of the lowest school tax rates in the area.
Board Approves Legislative Priorities
The Board approved its priorities for the 89th Texas Legislative Session, which will begin in January 2025.
The priorities are:
Increase the basic allotment to keep pace with inflation
Honor the teaching profession
Increase financial support for school safety
Continue property tax relief

TASB Board of Directors
The Board selected Dallas Pipes as a delegate, and Carlin Friar an alternate delegate, for the TASA/TASB Convention Delegate Assembly.
Input through TASB delegates will help determine the TASB advocacy agenda and elect TASB’s Board of Directors.
In addition, the Board endorsed Ginger Friesenhan of East Central ISD, for Region 20, Position A, and endorsed Rich Sena for Region 20 Position D, of the TASB Board of Directors, a position he has held since December 2023.
TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school boards. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.4 million public school students. For more information on TASB, visit tasb.org.
Reports to the Board
The Board was given a strategic plan update from Dr. Craft. The report highlighted:
Measurable goals for the 2024-2025 school year.
Includes goals in the areas of student success, talent, fiscal responsibility, and engagement.

The Board heard a report regarding planning for the 2025-26 budget, which detailed:
A process to engage stakeholders in preparation for the next budget.
BISD's operating costs have greatly increased higher than 23% inflation.

The Board was given a review of final Spring 2024 STAAR results, which included:
Due to a pending lawsuit, the issuance of 2024 A-F ratings are pending and subject to change based on judicial rulings.
BISD students excelled on the STAAR exam with overall student scores above state averages.
BISD increased its College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) to 90% in 2024, up from 86% in 2023.

The Board heard a presentation which detailed bond project updates, including:
Three major projects have been completed, with the opening of Viola Wilson Elementary School, the George and Baudelia Mitchell Learning Center, and the P-TECH Health Science Pathway addition at Boerne High School.
Later this fall, the new PTECH addition at Champion High School, as well as the Aquatics Learning Center will open.
The library renovations at BISD Legacy Elementary campuses Cibolo Creek, Curington, Fair Oaks Ranch, and Kendall are scheduled to be opened after the holiday break in 2025.

Finance
BISD receives funds from Kendall County to assist in employing crossing guards. These positions are critical to the safety of BISD students.
BISD is working to form a community committee that will thoroughly examine budget efficiency for the district.
BISD is projected to save approximately $700,000 to almost $2M in interest from the 2014 and 2016 bonds through early defeasement.
PTO
The Boerne Education Foundation hosted our annual PTO appreciation breakfast on August 16.
The breakfast aimed to connect PTO Presidents and Campus Principals with BEF to strengthen relationships and inform them about the foundation's fundraising efforts, which benefit students and teachers.
The PTO also learned about BEF history and events, as well as the purpose of BEF.
BEF
BEF hosted its annual retreat to discuss policies and procedures.
Rich Sena discussed school finance at the latest BEF meeting.
The annual Birdies for Boerne fundraiser is Friday, September 20.
Safety and Security
BISD was in full compliance with HB 3 mandates well before state deadlines, and are considered leaders in school safety.
BISD successfully trained over 500 first responders this summer in active response attack training.
Principal Preparation Program
The Board approved a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to allow BISD employees to participate in a Principal Preparation Program with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The agreement will provide students in principal certification courses with practical experience opportunities and provide a pathway for current BISD employees to advance to campus leadership positions.
SHAC Committee Approved
The Board approved the members of the The School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) for the 2024-25 school year.
The SHAC assists BISD in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction.
Chief of Student Support Services
Krista Pomeroy was promoted to Boerne ISD Chief of Student Support Services in July. She joined Central Office in January 2023 as Executive Director of Student Support Services.
Pomeroy has over 25 years of education experience, including three and a half years as Principal at Cibolo Creek Elementary.
Prior to her time in Boerne ISD, Pomeroy served as Principal in Southwest ISD and New Frontiers ISD.
Pomeroy graduated from Chapman University in Orange, California with a BA in Psychology. After moving to Texas, she continued her studies at the University of Texas-San Antonio earning an MA in Counseling, followed by an MEd in Educational Leadership from Concordia University in Austin, TX.
In addition to serving as principal, Pomeroy has had roles as an early childhood specialist, teacher, instructional coach, and assistant principal.
Director of Advanced Academics and CCMR
Boerne ISD named Boerne High School Lead Counselor Crissy Poulis as Director of Advanced Academics and CCMR for the district.
Poulis, who has nearly 20 years of education experience, served as Counselor at BHS for the past seven years. With the Greyhounds, she assisted students in post-secondary planning, was the campus testing coordinator and dual credit liaison, among other duties.
Prior to her time at Boerne High School, she spent three years as a 7th Grade Math Teacher at Boerne Middle School North.
Before joining BISD, Poulis spent nine years as a Math and Science Teacher, as well as Volleyball Coach at Comfort Middle School.
Poulis has earned two Master's Degrees, one in School Counseling from the University of Texas at Tyler, and a Master's in Education Principal Certification from Schreiner University. She is a proud Boerne High School Class of 2000 graduate.
Director of Human Resources
Boerne ISD introduced new Director of Human Resources Nadine Espinosa at this month’s Board meeting. Espinosa officially joined BISD in July.
Espinosa, who has over 20 years of HR experience, joins BISD after spending the last 23 years at San Antonio ISD. She was most recently the Director of Recruiting and Staffing at SAISD, after serving as Talent Partner, Administrative Officer, Hiring Specialist, and more.
Espinosa earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from The University of the Incarnate Word.

Superintendent's Report
Dr. Craft Introduced leaders who assumed new roles: Krista Pomeroy, Chief of Student Support Services, and Crissy Poulis, Director of Advanced Academics and CCMR, as well as welcomed Nadine Espinosa to BISD as Director of Human Resources.
BISD had more than 100 students who participated in convocation in various roles.
We’ve had an overwhelming positive response from parents regarding middle school cell phone restrictions.
The BISD Communications Audit survey is underway, with focus groups taking place in mid-September.
As of Monday, August 26, BISD had 11,045 students enrolled.
Leaders who assumed new roles were introduced: Krista Pomeroy, Chief of Student Support Services, Crissy Poulis, Director of Advanced Academics and CCMR, and Nadine Espinosa, Director of Human Resources.

Core Values in Action: The Texas Way
Boerne ISD Athletic Director Stan Leech provided a report regarding The Texas Way, a campaign for sportsmanship. This aligns with the Core Values Every Child, Every Day, Respectful Relationships, and Excellence Through Integrity.
The report discussed the district working with the UIL and THSCA to promote sportsmanship for student-athletes, parents, and spectators.
BEF WOW Moment
This month's BEF WOW moment highlights a flight simulator at Champion High School.
